"History Lesson in Pictures"

"There are no innocent. There are, however, different degrees of responsibility."
Stieg Larsson, "The Girl Who Played With Fire"

At the end of the last year I got a quite noble task, namely preparing a series of illustrations related with the Baptism of Poland (2016 is the 1050th anniversary of this event). The National Centre for Culture (NCK) gave me a great deal of freedom regarding technique and subjects, with only one stipulation: "no controversial themes". When the condition "no controversial themes" was repeated for the third time during the preliminary talks, I began to ponder about what so controversial could appear there... but haven't come up with anything brilliant.

Anyway, here are some of these works. Ready for a short history lesson? Here we go!

"Unification of Tribes" - one of the main consequences of Christening of Poland was unifying few tribes and creating one land with one sovereign.

"Old Beliefs" - that's the sad one actually. Statues of ancient gods were being destroyed on a massive scale and most Slavic beliefs gone irrecoverably, as they weren't written down.

"Writing" -  Writing came to Poland along with Christian monks. Finally!

"Architecture and Art" - here on the example of St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków.

Miniature Houses

Studying architecture certainly has its advantages: weight loss, adaptation to a small amount of sleep, acquiring some skills in designing architectural objects etc. Today I'll focus on the third aspect: designing architectural objects.

Recently I'm designing Winterdale - a fantasy, medieval land (which means in practice that I'm preparing concepts of various miniature buildings for Printable Scenery ).

Designs you can see below are a base for 3D modeling guys. They, in turn, are making models ready for printing on 3D printers. Honestly, I sympathize with them. I felt a little bit guilty when I was adding all the tiny, fancy details on paper. But the ultimate goal  is to give maximum fun while painting the models and to please the eye after that, right?

They are created for tabletop RPG games...or for decorating shelves. Personally I really like to watch tabletop miniatures, even if I don't have too many opportunities to play.

That's all for now, but expect more :)

Scandinavian Architecture

I wanted to draw this building ever since I saw it - Biologiska Museet in Stockholm. For quite a long time I was thinking about handrails and signboards on the front elevation. After an intense (though inner) discussion I made a decision to "remove" them. On the one hand inscriptions are an integral part of the building, but on the other hand... the drawing would look more atmospheric without them (hopefully). To work!

Chciałam narysować ten budynek, odkąd go zobaczyłam - Biologiska Museet w Sztokholmie. A teraz do roboty!

1. A sketch of basic blocks.

1. Szkic podstawowych brył.

2. A draft of details. Doubts about signboards are back (a fragment of a huge semicircle is one of them).

2. Zarys detali. Powracają wątpliwości co do losu szyldów (fragment ogromnego półkola to jeden z nich).

3. The rest of the details made with a thin, waterproof pen. Signboards' destiny was sealed. Probably I've already written that somewhere, but sketching details with a pen is the most anti-stress drawing stage.

3. Reszta detali wykonana cienkim, wodoodpornym flamastrem.

4. It's a high time for watercolors. I'm going to "determine the tonality", which means that I'm deciding  how bright the sunlit areas should be and how dark should be the elements in the shadow or made of darker materials.  Despite appearances I used 4 colors here: yellow, brown, brown and brown...

Wbrew pozorom użyłam tu 4 kolorów: żółtego, brązowego, brązowego i brązowego...

5. Below there should be a scan of an almost finished drawing, but it got lost somehow.

6. The final version with details emphasized with an ArtPen. Ink in this pen isn't waterproof so I have to cope with the fact that there won't be any further additions of watercolors.

That's all for now! The next blog post will be grim...

I to by było na tyle! Następny wpis będzie mroczny...

Computer Game - Buildings Designs

"Can fifteen years of imaginary training really be put to use? Apparently, it can."
"Oldboy", the movie

Long, long time ago(which means in November last year) I got a proposition of working on building designs for a computer role play game in a fantasy style. Perfectly for me! Floor plans, cross sections, thinking on proper construction systems - that's something directly related with my education. On the other hand the subject - buildings for diverse humanoids from various civilizations - was perfectly matched with my interests.
Projects were (and still are being) developed for a spanish studio Tenth Dimension and their game "Isoland". Maybe you'll hear about it one day :D.

Dawno, dawno temu (tzn. w listopadzie zeszłego roku) dostałam propozycję pracy nad projektowaniem budynków do komputerowej gry RPG w stylu fantasy. Idealnie dla mnie! Rzuty kondygnacji, przekroje, opracowywanie odpowiednich układów konstrukcyjnych  - to coś bezpośrednio związanego z moim wykształceniem. Z kolei tematyka , a więc budynki dla rozmaitych człekopodobnych stworzeń z różnych cywilizacji, trafiła idealnie w mój obszar zainteresowań.
Projekty zostały zrobione (i wciąż są opracowywane) dla hiszpańskiego studia Tenth Dimension, do gry "Isoland". Może kiedyś o niej usłyszycie :D.

1. House designs for a race called Queronts which lives in volcanic areas. It's a strong though not very sophisticated race with some dose of magic skills. Houses are made of material which is easily accessible there, namely basalt blocks which can be connected with acid-resistant steel (volcanic vapours can be quite corrodent). Small openings, simple form and even more simply construction. More "advanced" houses are covered with magic runes.

1. Projekt domów dla rasy Querontów zamieszkującej tereny wulkaniczne. To silna i dość mało zaawansowana technicznie rasa z pewnymi zdolnościami magicznymi. Małe otwory w ścianach, niewyszukana forma i prosta konstrukcja. Bardziej "zaawansowane" domostwa są pokryte magicznymi runami.

2. Military building for the same race. Large, rough stone blocks and openwork steel elements. The building itself consist of stone cubes surrounding hexagonal training court. The whole complex of buildings is sheltered with a high palisade and a moat filled with liquid lava. The gatehouse also makes it difficult to break through (hopefully).

3. The main building on the mining platform - I've got serious problems with devising shorter name - any ideas? According to plan the building was meant to develop during the game: the more workers - the higher habitable tower, the more resources- the more magazines and treatment tools.  Narrow stairs, which create a slit in a simple form of the main building, lead to a portal on the roof.

4. Various tools for  processing resources. Devising of how it all should work took me quite a lof of time but thankfully there is an Internet!

4. Rozmaite urządzenia do obróbki surowców.

As far as I know 3D models haven't been done yet and I'd really love to see them... I'm affraid that it'll take a lot of time before the game will be finished (as it usually happens in case of games) but luckily I can present  you my sketches right now.
