"History Lesson in Pictures"

"There are no innocent. There are, however, different degrees of responsibility."
Stieg Larsson, "The Girl Who Played With Fire"

At the end of the last year I got a quite noble task, namely preparing a series of illustrations related with the Baptism of Poland (2016 is the 1050th anniversary of this event). The National Centre for Culture (NCK) gave me a great deal of freedom regarding technique and subjects, with only one stipulation: "no controversial themes". When the condition "no controversial themes" was repeated for the third time during the preliminary talks, I began to ponder about what so controversial could appear there... but haven't come up with anything brilliant.

Anyway, here are some of these works. Ready for a short history lesson? Here we go!

"Unification of Tribes" - one of the main consequences of Christening of Poland was unifying few tribes and creating one land with one sovereign.

"Old Beliefs" - that's the sad one actually. Statues of ancient gods were being destroyed on a massive scale and most Slavic beliefs gone irrecoverably, as they weren't written down.

"Writing" -  Writing came to Poland along with Christian monks. Finally!

"Architecture and Art" - here on the example of St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków.

Miniature Houses

Studying architecture certainly has its advantages: weight loss, adaptation to a small amount of sleep, acquiring some skills in designing architectural objects etc. Today I'll focus on the third aspect: designing architectural objects.

Recently I'm designing Winterdale - a fantasy, medieval land (which means in practice that I'm preparing concepts of various miniature buildings for Printable Scenery ).

Designs you can see below are a base for 3D modeling guys. They, in turn, are making models ready for printing on 3D printers. Honestly, I sympathize with them. I felt a little bit guilty when I was adding all the tiny, fancy details on paper. But the ultimate goal  is to give maximum fun while painting the models and to please the eye after that, right?

They are created for tabletop RPG games...or for decorating shelves. Personally I really like to watch tabletop miniatures, even if I don't have too many opportunities to play.

That's all for now, but expect more :)

Winter Trees

I'm master in submitting posts with delay. Once again I'm writing about an illustration made over a year ago. Luckily the season of the year is adequate. No matter what the calendar says, for me winter begins in mid-November. And in this way the subject is very current :)

1. Sketch: When I don't draw complicated architectural objects, a fast, barely visible pencil sketch is usually quite enough.

1. Szkic: Zazwyczaj, kiedy nie rysuję skomplikowanej architektury, wystarcza mi szybki, ledwie widoczny zarys ołówkiem.

2. Color: I don't remember precisely which colors I used here, but it wasn't grey for sure (even if it seems so on first sight). I'd bet it was black, indigo and two shades of green: "bottlegreen" (I guess that's not an official name) and "olivegreen". White snowflakes are the result of splashing masking fluid with an old toothbrush (before using watercolors). The paint was applied with a quite broad brush  on a wet paper (so called "wet on wet technique"). This way quite unpredictable and yet natural effects can be achieved. Painting itself took quite a little time. But later I had to wait a long long time before the illustration dried up. Supposingly someday I'll use a hairdryer to shorten the waiting time.

Można w ten sposób uzyskać całkiem nieprzewidziane, a zarazem dość naturalnie wyglądające efekty. Samo malowanie zajmuje dość mało czasu. Później trzeba jednak długo czekać na wyschnięcie... chyba kiedyś się skuszę i użyję suszarki do włosów żeby skrócić czas oczekiwania.

3. Details: A thin brush, less diluted watercolor paint, a pen and a paper cutter to scratch white lines... ehmmm... what I cannot convey through words should be explained with details below:

3. Detale: Cienki pędzelek, niezbyt rozwodniona farba, piórko oraz nożyk do wydrapywania białych kresek... ehhh... to, czego nie jestem w stanie przekazać zgrabnie za pomocą środków werbalnych, wyjaśnią detale poniżej:

4. Efekt końcowy:

Something Dark - Board Game Illustrations

“Those who meant well behaved in the same way as those who meant badly.”
Aldous Huxley "Brave New World"

Drawings you can see below correspond perfectly with an ambience of this day. Or maybe it's only my grim mood... These are only a few of over 30 illustrations I made last year for a board game "Machina Arcana". Several artists were working on this quite complex project. My task was to draw a map and illustrate scenario cards. The plot of the story is a bit dreadful (frankly speaking it's completely dreadful) so I had to reach the darkest corners of my imagination to capture this horror-steampunk atmosphere :D

Musiałam więc sięgnąć do mrocznych zakamarków mojej wyobraźni, żeby należycie oddać steampunkowo-horrorowy klimat.

Process of making these illustrations was different than usual. The main problem was that cards' size was only 6x9 cm (if my memory serves me right). Originals were a little bigger than that and their size was almost A4 fromat. Fairly quick pen and watercolor drawings were scanned and then they were slowly and laboriously edited in Photoshop.  This let me to achieve high contrasts and very thin, clean lines. As a result even small, detailed illustrations are clear and legible.

Oryginały były oczywiście nieco większe - miały wymiar zbliżony do formatu A4.

The next post will be more optimistic. I have no idea what will be the subject, but I'll figure it out :)

Guitar Workshop

I've got so terrible emptiness in my head that it will be rather hard to write something eloquent (not for the first time and and not for last I'm afraid). Anyway today's post is going to be nice and pleasant :) It's about one of illustrations for Elly Guitar Co. - a company producing custom-made, hand-made guitars. Click on the pictures for a fullview!

1. A few-minutes preliminary sketch.  Initially it was meant to be a caricature of a guitar-maker (Patrick) in his workshop. It developed, went through a number of changes and finally...

1. Kilkuminutowy wstępny szkic.  Początkowo chodziło o narysowanie karykatury twórcy (Patricka) w swoim warsztacie. Szkic ewoluował, przechodził szereg zmian, aż w końcu...

2. The guitar-maker was removed , so he wouldn't divert attention from the workshop itself. However he have left his baseball cup and glasses.

3. First layer of colour - general color scheme.

3. Pierwsza warstwa koloru - ogólna kolorystyka.

4. Second layer : adding a delicate vignette, emphasizing of details, diversifying colors and separating the foreground from the background by "cooling" the background with bluish scheme.

4. Druga warstwa : delikatna winieta, podkreślanie detali, większe zróżnicowanie kolorystyki oraz mocniejsze rozdzielenie  planów przez "ochłodzenie" tła niebieskawym odcieniem.

A short glance at details:
Rzut oka na detale:

5. Lighting. It's probably the biggest change in the illustration's atmosphere, though paradoxically least time-consuming. I admit it - Photoshop came to help. Around the fragment which was meant to be illuminated by the lamp, I set up a semitransparent violet layer to sink into darkness the rest of the workshop. I guess I've just liked violet color.
