Mini Guide

"If you want to achieve something, you gotta work hard for it! Now shut up, they're about to announce the lottery..."
Homer Simpson "The Simpsons"

Some time ago I decided to take care of my organizational matters. It's not the most entertaining element of freelancer's activity, but undoubtedly it's very important. So here's a list of materials, that should be prepared by serious (haha) illustrators:
- logo/signature
- business cards (can be 2"x3,5"/9x5 cm, but I've got an impression, that each printing company offers different size)
- promotional postcards - they're send to publishers  instead of book sized portfolio to present illustrator's works quickly ( I chose 4,25"x6")
- self-designed stationery (some of potential employers require sending resume and other materials via regular mail)
-tear sheets (eg photocopies of magazines or books with your artworks)
- a well organised portfolio (best as a pdf file ready to print if necessary)
- a webpage
- a resume, a cover letter, a short bio - a real drama for those,  who prefer to communicate with others using images instead of words.
- sometimes even more...
And I racked my brain on each of these elements for hours. Work for yourself is a very ungrateful task.

Probably you've already seen the picture acting as the logo image:

Here you can take a look at Evi's business cards:

Calm down, these are only back sides. The front sides for each business card are here:

For Metal Fans ... hey, not only!

“Dolls with no little girls around to mind them were sort of creepy under any conditions.”

"Desperation"
Stephen King

Prepare for a large dose of dark, grim illustrations. Today is the release show of the album "Sanctuary" by a band called " From the Ashes of my Sins ", for which I've made the following illustrations. The idea was as follows: back cover was meant to illustrate song titled "Carnival", the front cover illustrates "Sanctuary", while the inner illustration presents "Broken Sanctuary". I decided to link all three illustrations into a coherent whole.

Dziś premiera albumu "Sanctuary" zespołu "From the Ashes of my Sins", dla którego zostały wykonane poniższe prace. Idea była następująca: tył okładki miał obrazować piosenkę "Carnival", przód to "Sanctuary", natomiast ilustracja do wnętrza opakowania to "Broken Sanctuary". Postanowiłam więc powiązać wszystkie trzy w spójną całość.

Back and front covers - two versions of concept sketches:

Tył i przód okładki  - szkice koncepcyjne w dwóch wersjach:

And the winner is... apparently the sketch no 2!

Zwycięzcą został... najwyraźniej szkic numer 2!

And here's a fun game for the whole family called "Find 5 Differences"! (Juxtaposition of front and inner illustrations.) Answers can be given in comments :)

A teraz gra-zabawa dla całej rodziny pt. "Znajdź 5 Różnic"! (Czyli zestawienie ilustracji frontowej z wewnętrzną.) Odpowiedzi można podawać w komentarzach :)

If these illustrations made you curious or if you just like heavy, melodic sound, listen to their music. Personally I recommend it!

Jeśli zaciekawiły was ilustracje, albo jeśli po prostu lubicie ciężkie, melodyjne brzmienia, posłuchajcie ich muzyki. Osobiście polecam!

Rocks Rock

Remember this: "Be it a rock or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same."

"Oldboy", movie

Continuation of watercolor painting from the previous post. One of the biggest advantages of nature is the randomness of forms. This encourages to experiment while painting nature's elements - rocks in this case.

Kontynuacja akwareli z poprzedniego wpisu. Jedną z największych zalet  natury jest przypadkowość jej form. To zachęca do eksperymentowania podczas prób namalowania jej elementów- w tym przypadku skał.

1. A sketch- despite appearances it's not an analytical cubism but an outline of a rocky hill.

2. Masking fluid applied with a cheap, worn-out brush with synthetic bristles. Spot application helps to achieve small, chaotic groups of spots indicating a rough rocks surface. Gentle brush strokes leave "scratches" emphasizing directions of rocks surfaces. We have to wait about 15 minutes and then we move to the next step.

2. Fluid maskujący nakładany tanim, zużytym pędzlem z twardego, syntetycznego włosia. Punktowe nakładanie pozwala uzyskać małe, chaotyczne grupy plamek, sygnalizujące chropowatą powierzchnię kamieni. Z kolei delikatne pociągnięcia pędzla zostawiają "rysy" podkreślające kierunek płaszczyzn skał.  Czekamy kwadrans na wyschnięcie fluidu i przechodzimy do następnego kroku.
3. We wet the paper. Using a soft brush with natural bristles we apply diluted watercolor (mix of violet, black and sepia). Naturally darker tones should be placed on shadowed areas, brighter and more diluted tones are placed on illuminated surfaces. Yet we can randomly add some salt. It helps diversify the pattern. After that we have to wait patiently until rocks dry up (about half an hour).

4. We remove fluid and salt and look with a critical eye at our "rocks".

4. Zdejmujemy fluid i ziarenka soli i krytycznym okiem spoglądamy na "skały".

5.Unfortunatelly  the form appeared to be unclear. It can be better displayed by precisely darkened shadowed areas (especially where illuminated and shadowed surfaces contact). Also we have to remember about shadows cast. With a brush dipped in clean water we can scrub rock edges here and there to get the effect of illumination by sun rays.

6. We emphasize rocks shapes with a pen (waterproof ink is more safe at this stage). We consciously try to emphasize textures previously created mostly by accident. Lines should not  look "automatic"- we can differentiate their thickness, some can be quivering, here and there we can make bigger stains.

7. Burnt sienna on rocks and around them should add some life to this scene.

7. Siena palona na skałach i wokół nich powinna dodać trochę życia całej scenie.

Extremely Easy Tree Tutorial

"(...) the criterion of common sense was never applicable to the history of the human race"

Necessity is the mother of invention. I've been working under great pressure of time lately. Well, it's rather difficult to think properly at 2 a.m so I had to figure out how to draw... without thinking. Even though it's  hard to believe, I did it! Below you'll see  the method of  painting attractive and yet extremely easy tree.

Tools:  paper, water, waterproof pen, watercolors, salt (nothing special actually) and:

Przybory: papier, woda, wodoodporny cienkopis, akwarele, sól (właściwie nic nadzwyczajnego) oraz:

masking fluid
fluid maskujący

a cheap, worn-out brush with synthetic, hard bristles
tani, zużyty pędzel z syntetycznym, twardym włosiem

a watercolor brush with soft, natural bristles
pędzel do akwareli z miekkim, naturalnym włosiem

an old, round shaving brush
stary, okrągły pędzel do golenia

1. A quick, rough sketch. A very low level of thinking is required - the shape should more or less resemble a tree. Just remember that branches should cross each other to show that the tree is 3-dimensional.

1. Szybki szkic.
2. Masking fluid on the trunk. We have to choose the direction of the light. If we don't want to think about it we can flip a coin. In this case the light fall from the left. We use a cheap brush with synthetic bristles to put the fluid on illuminated areas. The farther from illuminated areas the less fluid we put. Generally we don't have to think much then. The bark pattern comes by itself.

3. Masking fluid on leaves. We put the fluid by quickly pressing our old brush to the paper (without pulling it). We should place the fluid in the tree crown area but it's hard to call it "thinking" actually.

3. Fluid maskujący na koronie drzewa. Nakładamy punktowo przyciskając rozczłapany pędzel (bez przesuwania po kartce). Powinniśmy nakładać fluid w obrębie korony drzewa, niemniej trudno tu mówić o myśleniu.

4. Now we have to wait for 15-20 minutes because fluid needs to dry up. You can stare at your own feet then (hopefully your feet look better).

5. Painting the trunk - I mixed delicately (even carelessly) violet, sepia, red and burnt sienna (so they were not combined into a single color). We paint over whole trunk without thinking about the fluid.  We just have to bear in mind that illuminated areas should be painted with more diluted paint than shadowed areas. Before the paint dries up we can put grains of salt on it. Required level of thinking - very low.

6. Painting the crown - We put the paint with an old, round shaving brush and then we put some salt on it. Required level of thinking - even lower than in previous step.

6. Malowanie korony - Przy użyciu starego pędzla do golenia nakładamy plamy farby i solimy. Wymagane myślenie - jeszcze mniejsze niż w punkcie poprzednim.

7. Repetition of step 4. allows the paint to dry up. This time we turn off most of concious body functions for about half an hour.

8. We take the fluid and grains of salt off thoughtlessly.

8. Bezmyślnie zdejmujemy fluid i ziarenka soli.

9. Finally we have to turn on thinking a bit, though I call it intuition. We grab the pen and highlight the bark pattern, created accidently with masking fluid and salt.

9. Na koniec  trzeba włączyć nieco myślenia, choć ja nazywam to intuicją.   Łapiemy piórko i podkreślamy nim rysunek kory, otrzymany dość przypadkowo za pomocą fluidu maskującego i soli.

10. It's finished! Painting rocks in the next post.

 10. Gotowe! Malowanie skał w następnym wpisie.
