3-POINT PERSPECTIVE - TUTORIAL

Time to continue the last post . We will take a deeper insight into constructing the line drawing of "Fantasy Castle". Below you can see (and download) an exercise in a super-fun subject: 3-point perspective + a slant horizon. Naturally we could ask a question:

"Why bother about a perspective with 3 vanishing points if there's quite a lot of work with 2-point perspective?"

Well, it emphasizes an impression of the size of an object. In this case it will highlight that the castle was build on a rock protruding from the deep abyss.

Furthermore diagonal lines are more dynamic than  vertical, parallel ones and they give an impression of a speed (with which we could fall down into the lava for example...).

Hopefully this is useful somehow! The same tutorial (along with several other tutorials) is on the subpage "TUTORIALS" .

"Fantasy Castle"

“I know only one thing. When I sleep, I know no fear, no  trouble, no bliss. Blessing on him who invented sleep."

Stanisław Lem, "Solaris"

This is a  kind of prelude to the tutorial about 3-point perspective. I'll present here how the drawing was created step by step. Whereas principles of perspective will be explained in the next few days in a downloadable tutorial somewhere here http://grimdreamart.blogspot.com/p/tutorials.html. (At least that's the plan)

1. Setting a composition. Guiding lines were made with a pencil:

2. Aha! experience - it will be a castle. At this stage there are lots of constructional lines and I'm still not sure what shape the castle should eventually have. Using a pencil rather than a pen is much more safe right now:

3. When all what's desired is fixed with a waterproof pen (Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen is my personal favorite), we can get rid of additional interrupting lines. Well, it doesn't look excessively awesome, so...

4. Let's make some additions: windows, ornaments, dragons. It's immediately more cheerful, isn't it?

5. Time for watercolors. It's better to start with the environment before we'll go to the main subject. Apparently it's not necessary to choose warm colors for the foreground and the colder ones for the background. In some circumstances an exactly opposite approach can also work out well. Let's try it!

That's how the background looked like before it dried up. Grains of salt bravely absorb water and leave a fancy pattern:

6. These additions mentioned in the step 4...ekhmm, they're easier to draw with a pen than to paint with watercolors. I should have thought about that earlier...

7. Now it's time for textures made with a thin brush and dense paint. What's even more important I had to work further on overall color settings and  unify the whole painting. It required using a broad brush and diluted paint (yellow, purple and opaque gold):

8. Working on details with a pen once more. The whole drawing looks more "sharp" that way:

Downloadable Tutorial

This is just a swift entry with a downloadable tutorial based on a previous post http://www.grimdreamart.blogspot.com/2014/02/winter-scene.html .

I was asked for that by Vlad - thanks a lot for your interest in this work! I hope that also some of you will find it useful somehow :D

So there it is (after saving it on your computer it should be big enough to read it and take a look at details):

Dark... but hopeful :)

"My indifference to man has shut me out. I live now in a world of ghosts, a prisoner in my dreams.”
Ingmar Bergman, "The 7th Seal"

Recently I got a very interesting commission: a dark, primary forest with a touch of HOPE. So here are various stages of the work:
(by the way I highly recommend Bergman's movies to all people tired with action movies)

Ostatnio otrzymałam bardzo ciekawe zlecenie: ciemny, pierwotny las z odrobiną uczucia nadziei. A oto poszczególne etapy pracy:

1. Setting a composition. It looks quite chaotic now but there is a kind of "path" pointed by a broken branch and accented by a rock.

1. Ustawianie kompozycji.

2. Splashes of masking fluid (I use a tooth brush for that)  and a fast first layer of paint on the background. Background will be changed a lot in the next stages but for now it'll help me to extract individual trees.

3. Setting of colors. Background gets darker, warm colors on the foreground gets colder on the more distant trees. I can also finally remove masking fluid.

3. Ustawianie kolorystyki.

4. Almost finished! Textures, details, emphasizing of colors. At this stage I use a very thin brush.

4. Prawie skończone! Tekstury, detale, podkreślanie kolorów. Na tym etapie używam bardzo cienkiego pędzelka.

5. Now it's time to emphasize contrasts. I use a pen for the darkest elements (and a signature :) ) and a paper cutter for tiny highlights.

5. Teraz czas na podbicie kontrastów. Dla najciemniejszych detali (oraz podpisu :) ) uzywam piórka, natomiast do drobnych rozświetleń służy mi nożyk do papieru.

Below there are details from steps 3,4 and 5:

Poniżej zamieściłam detale z etapów 3,4 oraz 5:

Sleeping Soul

“It's better to be good than evil, but one achieves goodness at a terrific cost.”
Stephen King

A temporary (I hope so) lack of regular commissions makes me upset a bit... Just a small digression :)
"Sleeping Soul" - isn't that an intriguing title? I wouldn't come up with that myself, but that's the title of a poem for which I made the following illustration. So today's post deals with a slightly surreal human.

Just a pencil sketch and, yes, masking fluid again... but only in some specific places. I masked hair (beard, lashes, eyebrows,  hair on the head) and stars (I splashed masking fluid with broad brush with hard bristles)

...
...
...
...
...
... 3 hours later. I'm sorry, but painting the face swamped me completely so I've totally forgotten about documenting what was happening in that time. I put here a lot of layers with different colors until I was satisfied with tones and contrasts. It's really hard to explain what I exactly did. With technique "wet on wet" I painted first layer of a bedsheet. This awful "blot" doesn't bother me now.

Now I have to improve hair. With my face almost touching the paper, biting my lip (I always do that when I try to focus) I paint small shadows with  the thinnest brush I could find. Last thing required detailing is the bedsheet. Several layers of paint and we can't see the awful blot anymore!
