The One

We “met” almost 5 years ago and it felt like love at first sight (at least from my side). Since then I wanted to draw this building many times but somehow the right moment never came… under those 5 years (doesn’t sound convincing, I  know). I always had a soft spot for old wooden buildings with charming details and this one was very old and really beautifully detailed.

It’s called Vastveitsloftet and was originally build in  XIVth century in Norway. After a few hundred years it was transported to Stockholm’s Skansen.

The surrounding is really picturesque as the building is placed on a high rock, overlooking a bay. If we have poor eyesight we probably won’t even see gigantic, grey socialist architecture on the other side of the bay.

The building originally served as a storehouse and maybe that’s why it was so carefully decorated.
What I find charming in a wooden architecture, are imperfections in the material: knots, cracks, signs of deteriorations, and elements in different sizes.

One day later...

Sweet, but… dark, desaturated tones would be much more sufficient.

And one more day...

Gloomy, but not too gloomy (i.e. lagom gloomy). For some strange reason, this mood fits old Scandinavian buildings quite well :)

Winter Trees

I'm master in submitting posts with delay. Once again I'm writing about an illustration made over a year ago. Luckily the season of the year is adequate. No matter what the calendar says, for me winter begins in mid-November. And in this way the subject is very current :)

1. Sketch: When I don't draw complicated architectural objects, a fast, barely visible pencil sketch is usually quite enough.

1. Szkic: Zazwyczaj, kiedy nie rysuję skomplikowanej architektury, wystarcza mi szybki, ledwie widoczny zarys ołówkiem.

2. Color: I don't remember precisely which colors I used here, but it wasn't grey for sure (even if it seems so on first sight). I'd bet it was black, indigo and two shades of green: "bottlegreen" (I guess that's not an official name) and "olivegreen". White snowflakes are the result of splashing masking fluid with an old toothbrush (before using watercolors). The paint was applied with a quite broad brush  on a wet paper (so called "wet on wet technique"). This way quite unpredictable and yet natural effects can be achieved. Painting itself took quite a little time. But later I had to wait a long long time before the illustration dried up. Supposingly someday I'll use a hairdryer to shorten the waiting time.

Można w ten sposób uzyskać całkiem nieprzewidziane, a zarazem dość naturalnie wyglądające efekty. Samo malowanie zajmuje dość mało czasu. Później trzeba jednak długo czekać na wyschnięcie... chyba kiedyś się skuszę i użyję suszarki do włosów żeby skrócić czas oczekiwania.

3. Details: A thin brush, less diluted watercolor paint, a pen and a paper cutter to scratch white lines... ehmmm... what I cannot convey through words should be explained with details below:

3. Detale: Cienki pędzelek, niezbyt rozwodniona farba, piórko oraz nożyk do wydrapywania białych kresek... ehhh... to, czego nie jestem w stanie przekazać zgrabnie za pomocą środków werbalnych, wyjaśnią detale poniżej:

In a Vampiric Mood

A few pen drawings for a little break from painting.  In comparison with watercolors this technique is truly relaxing :) (at least for me). You don't have to prepare an ergonomic workspace which would enable you to use  a painting palette, a jar with water, paper towels,  and several other necessary tools. Also the daylight, which wouldn't change the perception of colors, is not really required. You don't have to wait UNTIL the paint dries. You don'e have to harry up to paint something BEFORE the paint dries. And of course there is no risk that you'll put the brush into your tea or drink the water from the jar.

This particular commission was even more pleasant because it was partly related to medieval architecture (which is one of my favorite subjects!). Illustrations (7 pieces) were made for a Manuel Cacho's book. I'll write little more about it when the book will be published.

Ilustracje (sztuk 7) zostały wykonane do książki Manuela Cacho. Napiszę o niej trochę więcej, kiedy wszystko będzie gotowe.

1. A nice, little castle:

1. Sympatyczny, mały zamek:

2. A little less nice gibbet (it's the second gibbet in my freelancer's career :) ):

2. Nieco mniej sympatyczna szubienica (to już druga szubienica w mojej karierze ilustratora :) ):

3. A slightly shabby room of the main character with a quite clever bathtub "invented" by the author of the book:

3. Trochę obskurny pokój głównego bohatera z całkiem sprytną wanną opracowaną przez autora książki:

Downloadable Tutorial

This is just a swift entry with a downloadable tutorial based on a previous post http://www.grimdreamart.blogspot.com/2014/02/winter-scene.html .

I was asked for that by Vlad - thanks a lot for your interest in this work! I hope that also some of you will find it useful somehow :D

So there it is (after saving it on your computer it should be big enough to read it and take a look at details):

Winter Scene

"stability isn't nearly so spectacular as instability. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune (...) Happiness is never grand."
Aldous Huxley, "Brave New World"

To be honest I do not like winter: a runny nose, frostnips, trudging through snowdrifts and wearing funny hats. For me the main advantage of the winter is  it's temporariness. Hovewer I have to admit that it's quite an inspiring drawing theme. It seems to be severe and ruthless (if we won't think about sleeding or making a snowman :) ).

That's why I thought about an abandoned and devastaded hut among leafless trees, when I got a task to illustrate "Winter Scene".

Dla tego, kiedy miałam zilustrować "Zimową Scenę", przyszła mi do głowy opuszczona, zniszczona chata pośród bezlistnych drzew.

Snowflakes were made by spattering  masking fluid with a brush with hard bristles (before using watercolors of course). These yellowish drops looking like a resin (this is the best association I came up with) are in fact my new masking fluid (the previous one was grey).

Efekt płatków śnieżnych powstał poprzez rozpryskiwanie płynu maskującego za pomocą pędzla o twardym włosiu (oczywiście przed użyciem akwareli). Te żółte krople przypominające nieco żywicę (to najlepsze skojarzenie, jakie przyszło mi do głowy) to właśnie mój nowy zaschnięty płyn maskujący (poprzedni, jak być może ktoś zauważył we wcześniejszych wpisach, był szary).

After removing the masking fluid we can see a paper white like (exactly!) snow.

Po zdjęciu go pozostaje papier - biały niczym (a jakże!) śnieg.

Finally I can add little more shadows and emphasize elements in the foreground with a pen.

Oh yes, details:

Ach tak, detale:
